Heritage Land Craft

Multiple Artists

Our Land Craft Programme uncovers and revives traditional craft practices that are intrinsically tied to local ecosystems, several of which are now on the endangered list of heritage crafts.

Craft is learnt not through formalised teaching, but through observation, repetition and touch.

The project has three strands:

  1. To explore craft as a medium to reconnect with the land, developing our understanding of the seasons, land management and rewilding processes.
  2. Preserve heritage craft as a significant, tangible part of culture which have existed for generations. Preserving knowledge for future generations and learning new skills.
  3. Recognising Milton Keynes as a melting pot for different cultures. How does inherited knowledge from immigrated cultures interplay or overlap with English heritage where it is specific to native lands?

Encouraging care, co-existence and collaboration and fostering new and unexpected encounters with the natural environment.

“All traditional crafts emanate, in one way or another, from nature. They are rooted in their local landscapes much like the materials they use”. - James Fox, Craft Land
